This survey talk has been given at the Dagstuhl-Seminar on Preferences and includes material from the articles Preference-Based Search and Multi-Criteria Optimization, Preference programming: Advanced problem solving for configuration, and Propagate the Right Thing: How Preferences Can Speed-Up Constraint Solving, among others. It discusses different problem tasks and shows how preferences may help to solve those tasks.
